An aspiring Assembly Member in Tema has appealed to the Judiciary to expedite the handling of violent cases related to the upcoming District Level Elections to serve as a deterrent to others.

Mr Christian Yaw Amoah popularly known as C.Y, immediate past and aspiring Assembly Member for the Homowo Electoral Area in Tema, said delaying such cases would only empower unscrupulous persons to perpetrate violence.

Mr Amoah noted that his area was a Hotspot and that recently a man popularly known as Kapanya reportedly inflicted cutlass wounds on another resident over an election-related argument.

He added that the case which was reported to the Tema Fishing Police ended at the Circuit Court and the accused was subsequently remanded for three weeks adding however that he was granted bail at another sitting after the three weeks had expired.

He said ever since the accused was granted bail and his case adjourned to “December 19, two days after the District Level Elections he had been inciting the youth in the community towards violence”.

Mr Amoah noted that “such election-related violence cases which had sufficient evidence to be prosecuted, must be swiftly handled to deter others as people in the community currently think that one can perpetrate such acts and walk free”.

He further appealed to the Police to intensify patrol and their presence at the various flashpoints to check deviant acts.

He said it was not good enough to wait and respond to chaos but would be prudent to have them in the community before, during and after the elections.
