Evans Otoo, a 32-year-old man serving an eight-month jail term at the Nsawam Medium Prison for refusing to pay a fine of GH¢3,000, has shared his ordeal.
In an interview with Crime Check TV on YouTube, Evans admitted to being involved in stealing car batteries and screens in Teshie, a habit that eventually landed him in prison.
According to him, his luck ran out when he was arrested for stealing the battery and screen of a Member of Parliament in Teshie.
“I slept at the police station for about two weeks before I was taken to court. The person I stole from was an MP. We returned all the items and the person I sold them to even compensated him with money. But the MP insisted I should be sent to Nsawam because people had stolen from him before; about three times,” Evans recounted.
He further revealed that he committed the act under the influence of drugs.
“I smoked weed and cocaine and it influenced me to go and steal the car battery and the screen. I was in the ghetto when they came looking for the thief. One of my colleagues betrayed me and that’s how I was arrested,” he said.

Evans explained that after stealing, he would sell the items in the ghetto to a buyer, who would then resell the items.
“If I had work to do, I wouldn’t have stolen from anybody. When I work, I stay away from all these things,” he added.
Meanwhile, Evans’ fine has been paid and he is set to be released from custody.
