A founder-member of the main opposition New Patriotic Party, (NPP) Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, says his party’s General Secretary “must resign” his position from the party.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe told XYZ Breakfast Show host, Moro Awudu, in an interview on Thursday that the “humiliation” suffered by Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie, also known as Sir John, makes him unfit to continue to be the Party’s General Secretary.

Mr. Owusu Afriyie and fellow party communicator, Hopeson Adorye, were dragged before the Supreme Court for criminal contempt in connection with the election petition trial.

Sir John, according to the summons, made unsavoury comments against the President of the nine-member panel of Justices, Mr. William Atuguba.

Mr. Adorye, on the other, was summoned for threatening to behead supporters of the governing National Democratic Congress if the Bench ruled in favour of the respondents.

The two politicians were scolded by the Bench on Wednesday and also found guilty of criminal contempt.

They were, however, spared custodial sentences but fined GHc5,000 and Ghc2,000 respectively.

Sir John confessed to the Court that he felt “humbled by the baptism of fire” after the scolding.

Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe believes Sir John, who nurses ambitions to retain the General Secretary position of his party, must resign honourably.

“As far as Mr. Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie is concerned, and what happened in court yesterday when he was totally humiliated by his own speech [is concerned], I think the most honourable thing for him to do now is to resign as the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party. Believe me, that will save him and save the party,” Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe said.
