Former CEO of the Commonwealth Telecommunications Organisation (CTO), Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, has warned naysayers within the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to create “unnecessary enmity” between him and former President John Dramani Mahama because there is none.
Dr Spio-Garbrah expressed his love for Mr Mahama despite his intention to contest against him, if he, Mr Mahama, decides to run for the party’s flag bearer race ahead of the 2020 general elections, saying, “It is only a contest.”
Speaking on the Executive Breakfast Show (EBS) on Class91.3FM on Tuesday, 15 May 2018, the former Trades and Industry Minister in the Mahama administration, said he has a good working relationship with the former president and contesting against him does not make them enemies.
He told show host Moro Awudu that: “There are people out there who think they love President Mahama more than myself, it’s not true at all. I actually love president Mahama more than most people who think they love him.
“This is because he worked under me as a Deputy Minister, he became a president and could have easily ignored me because I was working in Tunis at the African Development Bank at the time, but because of our very close working relationship, he stretched out his hands and said: ‘Ekow, please can you give up that job and come and work with me?’ And I’ve worked with him and I’ve supported him, so, if I had the attitude that I was his boss once, so, I’ll never work with him, I would never have been a cabinet minister under president Mahama. So, please those out there, don’t try and create unnecessary enmity and infighting between the candidates. We are all contesting for a position.”
Should Mr Mahama decide to contest, apart from Mr Spio-Garbrah, he will be contending against former CEO of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) Sylvester Mensah, Second Deputy Speaker Alban Bagbin, and former SSNIT Board Chair Prof Joshua Alabi.
