The appointment of Brigitte Dzogbenuku as vice-presidential nominee for the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) will not improve its chances in the December elections, Bernard Mornah, Chairman of the People’s National Convention (PNC), has said.

Ms. Dzogbenuku told Class News she would help the party bring change shortly after she was unveiled by Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, but in Mr. Mornah’s opinion, she would add nothing to the party’s votes.

“In terms of whether being a woman she would add anything extraordinary in terms of appealing to voters, I will say zero. I say this based on the fact that I just can’t fathom how a woman like Ursula Owusu will go and vote for Papa Kwesi Nduom because she has selected a female as running mate, I can’t see somebody like Nana Oye Lithur doing same,” he told Prince Minkah on the Executive Breakfast Show on Class91.3FM on Friday August 5.

Mr. Mornah noted that in 2012, Dr. Nduom selected a woman which made no difference, likewise the PNC, whose choice to go for a female running mate made no impact on its performances in 2008 and 2012.

“If you take the women that we are talking about, it is obvious that a woman will not go and vote for a woman running mate because she is a woman. I don’t see Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings going to vote for Papa Kwesi Nduom because his running mate is a woman.

All these women are already politically aligned…by the evidence and literature available, it is obvious that that has not worked in the past and it will not work this time… I will commend the PPP for nominating a woman, the PNC has done that on two occasions. It did not yield the results that people thought it would yield, so I am a bit sceptical that selecting a woman will necessarily draw women’s votes to that political party,” Mr. Mornah said.
