EC Sack: It will be tragic to turn matter into a political affair - Hamid

Minister of Information, Mustapha Hamid has emphasized that the recent expulsion of the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) Charlotte Osei and her two deputies; Amadu Sully and Georgina Opoku Amankwa is in no way politically oriented.

According to him, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo acted based on the findings of the report by the committee set up to investigate allegations filed against the EC Chair and her deputies on the misappropriation of funds.

Mustapha Hamid described people who intend to conclude that the decision to sack the indicted EC executives is a political affair, as persons who do not "seek the welfare of the country".

The conclusion by the committee spearheaded by Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo found the officials guilty while describing their inept actions as "absurd", "gross incompetence", "misconduct" as well as "abuse of office".

At a media briefing on President Akufo-Addo's implementation today, Mustapha Hamid stressed, "...This removal of the Chairperson of the EC and her two deputies, has nothing to do with the President, his government, the NPP, or indeed, any political party."

Then again, the statement further read that matters that became the subjects of the petitions against the former Electoral Commissioner and her colleagues were the same set of allegations which the EC officials threw against each other in the media and in the public scene, including Madam Charlotte's allegation that Mr Sully misused GHC6m from political parties and the counter allegation against her that she abused the procurement processes in several contracts.

The Information Minister was quick to add that the President, is subject to the laws of the land adding that he took an oath to abide by the dictates of the Constitution.

In his words, President Akufo-Addo has "done nothing more or less than to uphold the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana"
