EC assures of credible and peaceful Akwatia by-election

Deputy Director of Research at the Electoral Commission (EC), Fred Tetteh, has reiterated his outfit’s preparedness to conduct a credible and transparent by-election in the Akwatia constituency on September 2, 2025, following the passing of Member of Parliament, Ernest Kumi.

In a citinewsroom.com report on August 20, 2025, he assured the electorate that adequate measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth exercise.

“Be assured that the Commission will do its utmost best in providing the logistics, arrangements, training and whatever is needed to have a smooth and peaceful election,” he said.

He noted that logistics and the nomination processes have been completed, with training for EC officials currently underway ahead of the polls.

The announcement comes amid heightened concerns over security, following recent clashes and reported assaults on journalists during the Ablekuma North rerun.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed fears of potential violence, urging security agencies to guarantee the safety of voters and electoral officers during the by-election.

Meanwhile, the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) has appealed to the public and political stakeholders not to politicise security arrangements, stressing that Ghana’s electoral institutions and security forces remain capable of delivering a free, fair, and peaceful election.
