EC outlines modalities for the 2024 special voting exercise

The Electoral Commission (EC) has detailed the procedures for the 2024 special voting exercise, scheduled for December 2, 2024.

This announcement was made during a meeting with the national executive of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) in Accra on May 28.

In a press conference, the EC chair, Jean Mensa, elaborated on the specific measures adopted to ensure a smooth special voting process.

All applicants must apply directly to the returning officer in the constituency where they are registered voters.

Institutions seeking to apply as a group should submit their officers' names to the returning officers to facilitate the registration process.

"The list must contain the name of the applicants, Voter ID, and polling station code to enable the returning officer to verify if the applicant is a registered voter in the constituency. All applicants must apply in person to the returning officer," the EC stated.

Additionally, the EC emphasized the need for applicants who have misplaced their Voter ID cards to replace them during the exercise. This replacement will ensure that the correct particulars are provided for the registration.

Special voting is designed for eligible voters who will be unable to vote at their registered polling stations on the general election day, December 7, 2024. This provision primarily covers personnel from various security and public service sectors.

EC Chair Jean Mensa outlined the groups eligible for special voting, which include the Ghana Armed Forces, National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), National Security, Ghana Immigration Service, Ghana National Fire Service, and the Information Services Department.

Other eligible groups are members of the National Ambulance Service, Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Prisons Service, Ghana Journalists Association, Ghana Police Service, and the National Media Commission.
