The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana is set to propose a bill in Parliament to make the national identification card, commonly known as the Ghana Card, the sole document for the identification of a citizen during voter registration.

EC Chairperson Jean Mensa revealed this development to Graphic Online on Wednesday, following an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) meeting in Accra on May 29, 2024. Jean Mensa stated that the EC has secured the full support of all political parties, clearing the way for the legislative process.

In an interview with Graphic, she explained that the EC intends to present the bill during the next parliamentary session.

"At the IPAC meeting, the issue of the Ghana Card was discussed extensively, and the advice was for the EC to proceed with laying the bill that seeks to make the Ghana Card the sole document for identifying a citizen," she said.
