ECG privatization: Mahama being dishonest – Karbo

Deputy Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Anthony Abayifa Karbo has asked President Mahama to stop shifting and come clean on the alleged privatisation of the Electricity Company Ghana, insisting that Mahama is not being honest in the deal.

President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) will not be sold.

“Let me restate ECG is and will remain a wholly owned state enterprise,” he insisted during a speech at this year’s May Day celebration at Wa in the Upper West Region.

He further explained that: “government has no intention of privatising ECG” indicating that the “agreement under the Millennium Challenge Compact is to leverage private sector participation at the client level to assist in resolving client complaints and revenue collection”.

Commenting on the back of President Mahama’s position in an interview with Kasapa News on the alleged sale of ECG, Karbo said the ongoing development at the state power company makes it more pronounced that it is on the verge of being sold and privatised.

According to him, President Mahama is only misleading Ghanaians and not being frank with the public.

“Government has already opened a tender for bidding in the management of the power provider. And for that matter about 62 companies are involved in the process. Mahama is not being honest with the sale of ECG” Karbo said.

As part of the second Millennium Challenge Compact under the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), government has reached an agreement with the U.S. Government for a $500 million facility to revamp ECG. This will require that a private company manages the power provider.
