EOCO responds to Woyome's writ

Accra Feb. 7, GNA - The Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO) has responded to Alfred Agbesi Woyome’s writ that sought to restrain it from continuing with investigations in the judgment debt saga.

At the Fast Track High Court on Tuesday, Ms Doris Nortey who represented Woyome indicated that she had not been served with the statement of defence filed by EOCO.

Dr Philip Anderson, counsel for EOCO, handed over a copy of the statement of defence to Ms Nortey in court.

On receipt, Ms Nortey indicated to the court that she needed time to study it.

The court presided over by Mr Justice K. A. Ofori Atta could not hear the matter and adjourned it to February 13.

Woyome, a businessman had filed two writs, first, questioning the mandate of EOCO to investigate the matter.

Their case is that EOCO cannot investigate the judgment of a court.

Woyome’s lawyers are consequently seeking an injunction to stop EOCO from continuing with the investigations.

The lawyers are also challenging EOCO’s action to freeze Mr Woyome’s bank accounts. It would be recalled that President John Evans Atta Mills ordered EOCO to investigate the payment of the judgment debt of GHC51 million, which had generated national debate.
