Ghana’s First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, has been leading other prominent women in the country to call for an end to violence and discrimination against women as the world celebrates International Women’s Day today, March 8, 2017.

Celebrations in Ghana are focusing on economic empowerment of rural women.

Mrs. Akufo-Addo is hoping Ghanaian women will get the needed support from the Ghanaian society to succeed in their endevours.

According to her, despite the progress made in empowering women over the years, more remain to be done for young girls and women to realise their full potentials.

“We know we still have a long way to go, there is so much to be done,” Mrs. Akufo-Addo stated.

“Our women cannot wait any longer, our girls cannot wait any longer, we have customary laws that discriminate against women in land ownership, still have violence against women, women lack the necessary support to participate in politics that’s why we need to come together to empower and change the lives of women and our society”.

The Day has been set aside to commemorate the struggle for women’s rights globally.
