Expert warns of boundary dispute with Togo

An oil and gas expert is warning of a potential maritime boundary dispute with Togo following the partial resolution of the impasse between Ghana and La Cote D’IVoire.

The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea has directed Ghana not to undertake any new drilling in the disputed maritime boundary with Ivory Coast.

Ghana can continue with ongoing oil projects in the area, but that will have to be done under strict monitoring to protect the maritime atmosphere.

Speaking to Morning Starr host Bernard Nasara Saibu Monday, Oil expert Kwame Jantuah said there could be another boundary dispute between the two West African countries if the appropriate legal regime is not put in place to protect Ghana's territory.

“If it happened on the Ivorian side, it can also happen on the Togo side so we should quickly look at that boundary and start looking at ways to fortify boundary.

“If we don’t take the necessary legal steps to secure the territory that approaches Togo, a similar battle can occur in the near future," Jantuah explained.
