A man identified as Moses Barnabas is seeking justice after his two children, aged 10 and 8, were allegedly flogged by a teacher at Trinity Methodist Preparatory School in Egyaa in the Mfantseman Municipality.

The teacher reportedly punished the two pupils after accusing them of sitting on chairs that had been arranged for a school programme.

The incident has since been reported to the police, with medical forms issued for the children to undergo examination.

Narrating the incident, Barnabas said the children’s mother first noticed something was wrong when she returned home and found them crying.

“Their mother came home around 5 o'clock, only to realize that the two children were crying. They are called Jedidiah and Theophilus Degraft Mensah,” he said.

“Jedidiah is 10 years while Theophilus is 8 years old. They were crying on top of their voice, so their mother questioned them about why they were crying. The elder child, Jedidiah, responded that they sat on wooden chairs in their school, which had been arranged for a program,” he explained.

According to him, the teacher accused them of committing an offence for sitting on the chairs, which had been arranged for a programme.

“The teacher questioned them, asking why they sat on it whilst the chairs had been arranged for a program. In view of that, they have committed an offence, and so, he decided to give them 10 strokes each. One of the children didn't cry after the 10 strokes, and so he decided to add another 10 strokes,” he stated.

Barnabas further alleged that the teacher increased the punishment for one of the children.

“The teacher said, ‘As for you, I have not even caned you before, ever since I came to this school, and because of that, I have to increase the strokes to 40’," he indicated.

He said the children sustained several marks on their bodies as a result of the alleged flogging.

“Looking at their body, there were lots of marks of assault on the bodies, as if they had been tattooed,” he added.

Barnabas indicated that he immediately informed the headteacher of the school about the incident and also reported the matter to the police.

“So when I had the information, I quickly called the head teacher of the school to give him the information. I told him I've decided to report the issue to the police station, and he said okay.

“So later on, I sent the pictures of the marks of the assault to the head teacher, who saw the extent of the whole incident,” he stated.

He stressed that his decision to pursue the matter is to ensure justice and protect children in schools.

“… I think that issues of this nature are always after justice because if lessons are not learnt, the same thing is going to happen in the future… so we need to protect each other and make sure that there's safety at school,” he said.
