The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is staging a demonstration in Accra on Thursday, August 6, 2026, dubbed "Democracy Under Attack", to protest what it describes as threats to Ghana’s democratic governance.

The protesters began their march from the Supreme Court, where leaders of the party will present a petition to the Judiciary.

The petition outlines the party’s concerns over recent judicial decisions and calls for what it describes as greater protection of judicial independence and the rule of law.

After presenting the petition, the demonstrators will embark on a peaceful march through some principal streets of the capital before proceeding to the Jubilee House.

The party says the demonstration is aimed at drawing attention to alleged attempts to suppress dissent and weaken democratic institutions.

The organisers have accused the government of actions they claim undermine democratic principles, including alleged arrests of opposition voices, restrictions on freedom of expression, and what they describe as selective justice.

They argue that democracy requires governments to tolerate criticism and protect the rights of citizens, regardless of their political affiliations.

The party is calling for equal treatment under the law and urging authorities to uphold democratic values and respect the independence of state institutions.
