Focus on our uncompleted hospitals and interchanges, not new register – Muntaka

The Member of Parliament for the Asawase Constituency Alhaji Muntaka Mubarak Mohammed has asked the Ashanti region to demand that government completes the seven uncompleted hospitals and commence construction of the promised interchanges if it has 800 million cedis to satisfy the demands of the Electoral Commission.

The Member of Parliament hosted scores of leaders of the opposition National Democratic Congress and members of the Interparty resistance against the compilation of a new voter’s register, to hold its mammoth Yempene demonstrations in the Ashanti regional capital Kumasi.

The group is demanding a halt to the plans of the Electoral Commission to procure a New Election Information Management System and to compile a new biometric voter’s register with enhanced facial recognition plug-in.

The group insists the EC’s explanation that the current system is obsolete, out of its service life and susceptible to a complete crush is technically unjustifiable and economically untenable.

Addressing scores of demonstrators who converged at the Jubilee Park, Muntaka Mohammed Mubarak recounted the huge expenses incurred by offices working under Akufo Addo at the presidency to buttress his argument of an extravagant administration.

“In nine months, the president used 62 million to travel. Your president used 20 billion old Ghana cedis to drink tea. They are now telling us that there is something called operational enhancement expenditure which they spent 620 billion old cedis.

If the president has money, he should use it to build our uncompleted hospitals. He should use same to build our interchanges which we were promised,” he exclaimed.



He insisted that he will continue to lead the charge to ensure that the “needless duplication of biometric voter registrations” does not materialize.

Notable party executives in the opposition who joined the demonstration included the former Minister of Energy Kofi Armah Boah, the vice-chair of the opposition NDC Baba Sofo Azoka, former Ashanti Regional Minister Dr Samuel Sarpong, Chairman of the PNC Bernard Mornah, and all the regional executives of the National Democratic Congress.
