A group of young farmers in the Krobo area have asked authorities to act swiftly to check the destruction of their farms by Fulani herdsmen and their cattle.

The Krobo Youth Group said tensions were rising over the movement of the herders and their animals into the area, with mango farmers being the worst affected.

Speaking on Accra100.5fm’s Ghana Yensom Thursday February 11, 2016, a member of the group, Komla Hegme, told Chief Jerry Forson that about 50 acres of mango plantation had been destroyed by cattle in the area.

He said the Fulani had stepped up their presence in Odumase Krobo, Somanya, and surrounding towns, and he believed they had relocated there, probably after being driven away from nearby Fanteakwa and other areas where they had previously caused trouble.

The group said the cattle had destroyed both young and fruiting mango trees, by trampling on nurseries.

Food crop farmers, the group further alleged, had been affected, maize and cassava farmers mainly losing their crops to cattle.

The group explained that it had submitted petitions to the Municipal Chief Executive and Municipal Director of Agriculture for the area but to no avail. They have warned that they could soon be forced to fight back.
