The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) boss, Mr. Kofi Portuphy has descended heavily on former Member of Parliament (MP) for Okai-Koi South, Nana Akomea, describing him as a man with no moral right to accuse authorities at the organization of misappropriation and inappropriate use of relief funds.

Sounding very incensed, he denied any lavish spending, saying NADMO, is rather buried in huge debt to the tune of GH¢186 million, for the past one and half years.

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) for some time now has been accusing the NADMO management of spending more than GH¢300 million of their budgetary allocation in the run-up to the 2012 general elections.

Director of Communication for the NPP, Nana Akomea, contributing on Asempa FM yet again accused NADMO of over-spending (GH¢350 million), its budget in the 2012 election campaign.

But Mr. Portuphy, who called into the programme to set the records straight, jabbed Mr. Akomea, describing his claim as palpably false, challenging him to provide evidence or shut up his noisy mouth.

The NADMO boss said, “We have not exceeded our budget in the last four months before the end of last year. Nana Akomea should bring prove and stop [the] lies” Mr. Portuphy confirmed The Herald’s March 9 publication under the headline “NADMO WAREHOUSE GOES EMPTY” saying that for now, all NADMO’s warehouses across the country are empty due to lack of money to buy relief items.

He revealed that, apparently, NADMO’s creditors were chasing him daily for monies owed them because government had not resourced them.

He noted that what the NPP’s Communications Director was doing was a calculated scheme intended to deceive and inflame the passions of the general public in order to ridicule government.

According to Mr. Portuphy: “When disasters occur and we are taking care of Ghanaians, we don’t go looking for NDC and NPP people. We take care of all the people in the community; that is our hallmark”.

He said NPP Members of Parliament on the Defense Committee in Parliament can attest to the fact that no money was allocated to NADMO prior to the elections.

The furious NADMO Coordinator said the former MP had no moral right to accuse NADMO of overspending because he [Akomea] while at the Information Ministry as Minister was allegedly involved in some corrupt deals.

Meanwhile for transparency, The Herald is informed NADMO had tasked all district and metropolitan offices to engage the media in all its activity to enable the public be informed about NADMO’s operations.
