Legal practitioner and stalwart of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Gabby Otchere-Darko, has addressed alleged calls within the party to remove the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, from his position as Minority Leader in Parliament.
Speaking in an interview on Asaasepa on February 3, 2026, Gabby stated that he has not heard of any such calls to remove the Minority Leader.
He explained that although he has not heard of these claims, he believes the current state of the Minority in Parliament is strong, and their performance has been commendable.
Gabby further noted that he recently saw the Minority Leader together with the NPP presidential candidate, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and expressed confidence that they can work together for the benefit of the party.
“I haven’t heard calls that they should remove Afenyo-Markin, but I think the Minority has done well. They have held this party together for the past twelve months.
“I also saw footage of him with the presidential candidate, and I am confident the party, in its wisdom, will remain stable,” he said.
It is recalled that presidential hopeful Kennedy Agyapong called on Alexander Afenyo-Markin to step down from his position.
According to Agyapong, there are individuals within the party actively seeking the Effutu Member of Parliament position in the Central Region.
'Ghana is crying for NPP's bold, competent leadership' – Afenyo-Markin
He said he has advised the Minority Leader to step down and allow those challenging him to take over.
Agyapong further stated that Afenyo-Markin is financially well-established and therefore does not need to cling to the parliamentary position.
“He is well-to-do, so he should leave the position for those who are fighting him,” he said.
Speaking in an interview on UTV on December 15, 2025, Agyapong claimed that internal power struggles within the party drive criticisms of Afenyo-Markin’s leadership style.
“Those criticising Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s leadership want positions. Some people are arguing that the Minority Leader should come from the Eastern Region or the Ashanti Region. I have told him to leave the position for them, and I have personally called him to tell him to step aside.”
He added that he deliberately refrained from naming those pushing for the position.
“If it were in the olden days, I would have mentioned all those seeking his position’s names, but now I won’t. He can eat for the rest of his life, and it shouldn’t look like being an MP is the only way to survive,” Agyapong stated.
Afenyo-Markin has faced criticism over his leadership style from various quarters, including Solomon Owusu, a Senior Communicator for the Movement for Change.
“If the NPP has a weak leader like Afenyo-Markin, then it is no surprise the party keeps collapsing,” Owusu remarked.
