Ghana Navy adjudged the best in West Africa

Ghana Navy was adjudged the best navy in the West Africa sub-region by a renowned international security agency, World Security Watch, for last year.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Geoffery Mawuli Biekro, who disclosed this, said the achievement was based on discipline, hard work and commitment exhibited by the personnel who also as provided quality surveillance on the country’s maritime domain.

He therefore entreated the personnel not to rest on their oars but rather strive for higher successes in the coming years, to enhance the maritime security of the country for accelerated national development.

Rear Admiral Biekro made this known at this year’s Administrative Inspection parade by the Western Naval Command in Sekondi on Friday.

The event was aimed at assessing the operational readiness and performance of the Command, as well as to take stock of its challenges and plan the way forward.

Rear Admiral Biekro reviewed the parade that comprised 188 ratings and 60 officers, who displayed matching skills and drills with dexterity, to the admiration of the civilian population that thronged the Sekondi Naval Base to witness the biennial ceremony.

He advised the officers that had just retired from the Service to exercise extreme caution when investing their monies in any venture to avoid being defrauded or short changed.

He urged the retirees to seek sound financial advice from financial experts so as to safeguard their investments.

The Chief of the Naval Staff indicated that 368 housing units would be allocated to the Navy when the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources completed its housing project, to improve acute accommodation situation faced by the military.

He assured that a number of projects were being executed by the government to improve on the operational, administrative and welfare of personnel, saying “a healthy mind lives in a healthy body”.

He indicated that an electronic security surveillance device had been secured by the navy, to improve surveillance of the country’s territorial waters, to halt illicit drug trading, piracy, bunkering and any other illegal activities being undertaken on the high seas.

He commended the Western Naval Command for judicious use of resources and providing excellent security over the years and, therefore, charged them to maintain the momentum.

Rear Admiral Biekro on behalf of the naval headquarters presented four buses to the Command for its operational and administrative purposes.

The Flag Officer Commanding the Western Naval Command, Commodore Godson Kwablay Zowonoo, assured that the Command would provide proper maintenance of the buses to prolong their life span.

Some naval personnel who distinguished themselves in line of duty were rewarded.
