Ghana United Nations Association calls for urgent action against galamsey

The Ghana United Nations Association (GUNA) has raised concerns over the growing environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, popularly known as "galamsey."

In a press release, GUNA highlighted the severe ecological and public health consequences of the illegal mining operations and called for immediate action from all stakeholders to address the crisis.

According to GUNA, "galamsey" has become a major threat to Ghana’s environment, economy, and public health and despite efforts by the government and civil society to curb the illegal practice, galamsey continues to destroy large swathes of fertile land, pollute water bodies, and undermine the livelihoods of many Ghanaians.

GUNA urged all stakeholders, government, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society organizations, and the private sector, to work together to tackle this issue.

"The Ghana United Nations Association calls on all stakeholders, including the government, traditional leaders, local communities, civil society, and the private sector, to take urgent and coordinated action to address this crisis.

"We urge the following measures:

"Strengthen Law Enforcement: The government must intensify efforts to enforce existing environmental laws and regulations, prosecute offenders, and dismantle the networks that enable illegal mining operations.

"Promote Sustainable Mining Practices: We advocate for the promotion of legal and sustainable mining practices that protect the environment while contributing to the economy. This includes supporting small-scale miners in obtaining licenses and adhering to environmentally friendly practices," the press release said.

GUNA stressed that the environmental damage caused by galamsey is not just a national issue but a crisis that threatens Ghana's collective future.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to supporting efforts aimed at eradicating illegal mining and promoting sustainable development in the country.

"We believe that through collaborative and decisive action, we can protect our environment and ensure a healthier and more prosperous future for all Ghanaians."
