A convener of the Fixthecountry movement, Adatsi Brownson, has dismissed a statement from Ghana Water Limited on the progress made at the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant as political gimmicks.

The Central Regional management of the Ghana Water Limited announced that the raw water source to the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment has witnessed a significant improvement of approximately 35.71 percent.

The GWL, in an update on water supply to customers within Cape Coast, Elmina, and surrounding communities, disclosed that the Sekyere Hemang Water Treatment Plant is currently recording an average turbidity of 9,000 NTU as compared to the previous average turbidity of 14,000 NTU.

The Ghana Water Limited attributed the improvement to the effort of the Central Regional Security Council led by the Regional Minister, Justina Marigold Assan.

"As a result of this event, production at the plant has now increased from 1,981,290 gallons/day to 2,773,807 gallons/day. We wish to assure our cherished customers within Cape Coast, Elmina, and the surrounding communities that every effort is being made to supply adequate water to meet their demands.

"Efforts are being made by the Central Regional Security Council to help improve the raw water source quality,” the statement issued by the Ghana Water Company said.

Reacting to the statement while addressing protesters on day two of the three-day protest organised by the Coalition of Concerned Citizens against galamsey on Friday, October 4, 2024, Adatsi Brownson asserted that the statement was merely a political attempt to divert Ghanaians' attention from the real issues.

According to him, the progress made by Ghana Water Limited is insufficient and below the required standards, raising concerns about the treatment procedures being used and the alarming amount of chlorine intended for use in treating the water.

“…14,000 NTU and to about 9,000 NTU and people were applauding them, that is sheer politics. Even if it is 9,000 NTU the requirement is for us to have below 4 NTU. How are they going to treat 9,000 NTU to 4 NTU or below? Look at the amount of chlorine that our water is going to have in addition to the heavy metals like mercury, cyanide, arsenic, lead, and other harmful chemicals,” he said.

Adatsi Brownson therefore issued a seven-day ultimatum to the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources to ban all legal and illegal mining activities with immediate effect.

“The devastation caused by galamsey is undeniable and the effects are very catastrophic. What we are saying today is the Ministry of Land and Natural Resources to put a ban on all legal and illegal mining activities that are destroying our lands immediately with no exceptions. We are giving them 7 days with no delays, promises, and meetings,” he added.
