Ghana card: Minority to go to court - Muntaka Mubarak

The Minority in Parliament is preparing to file a case in court against the National Identification Authority (NIA) over the Ghana Card registration exercise, Muntaka Mubarak, Member of Parliament for Asawase and Minority Chief Whip, has said.

According to him, the minority has problems with the documents – Birth Certificate and Passport, the NIA is demanding from Ghanaians in order to be able to register.

He explained in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson on Ghana Yensom on Accra 100.5FM Monday, June 11 that these requirements will make it impossible for most Ghanaians to register because not too many people have a passport and also a biometric birth certificate.

Mr Muntaka also noted that the NIA officials have failed to respond to an invitation by Parliament to provide answers to some questions lingering on the minds of Ghanaians.

To that end, the Minority, he said will go to court to determine whether or not the documents the NIA is demanding are legitimate.

“We have realised that the NCA officials are not willing to come to parliament to answer questions and so we are going to organise a full-blown press conference to announce our main concerns. Then we will go to court for the court to compel them to act. It appears they don’t respect the work of parliament and that is not fair.”

He added: “We will go to court for the court to determine whether those documents are legitimate and we hope the court will act in the interest of Ghana.”
