Critical sectors of Ghana’s economy have been hijacked by foreigners, a situation that portends ill consequences for the country’s development, Deputy Youth Organiser of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Mr Ernesto Yeboah has said.

“The biggest challenge that will confront [a future CPP Government] has to do with the useless agreements that our leaders have somehow undertaken with other countries, with other nations, with other companies,” he told Kafui Dey, adding: “…I think that it is something that we will have to take a critical look at.”

In Mr Yeboah’s view, Ghana is not in control of its own economy as things are now.

“You can’t have a situation where 97 percent of your gold is in the hands of foreigners; you can’t have a situation where 86.5 percent of your oil is in the hands of foreigners and you think that you have control over you economy; you can’t have the situation where [the] Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is about to be sold to General Electric (GE).

“It is very clear what is happening. We’re hijacked in almost every aspect of our lives and somebody has to halt these things,” the youth leader said.

He said the current crop of leaders “must be bold to take the economy back. Today as we speak we don’t own our economy.”
