Accra, July 25, GNA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs through the International Organization for Migration (IOM) would evacuate Ghanaians caught up in the bombardments in Lebanon.
A statement signed by Mr Jefferson Kwamina Sackey, Media Relations Officer of the Ministry, said there had been no reports of injury or casualty involving Ghanaian nationals.
It said the Ghana Embassy in Cairo, Egypt had been in close consultations with the Ghanaian community through the Honorary Consul in Beirut, towards arriving at a comprehensive arrangement for their evacuation from Lebanon.
"An agreement has been reached with the IOM to evacuate Ghanaians, who wanted to leave Lebanon", the statement said. The statement said under the arrangement, the about 140 Ghanaians out of which 108 were adults and the rest children would be conveyed to Damascus, Syria on July 27, 2006 for a 24-hour stop-over before their repatriation by air to Ghana.
Evacuees would be met on arrival by Ghanaian Ambassadors to Egypt and Saudi Arabia and Consular Officers, who would co-ordinate activities with the IOM to facilitate their departure.
The Ministry said it would continue to monitor developments in Lebanon with regards to Ghanaian residents and inform the nation accordingly.
