Go on hunger strike – Lawyer tells Gregory Afoko

Gregory Afoko, one of the two suspects standing trial for the murder of New Patriotic Party (NPP) Upper East Regional Party (NPP) chairman, Adams Mahama in 2015 has been encouraged to go on a hunger strike to protest the violation of his rights in the ongoing trial.

An Accra High Court on Monday overturned an earlier decision of another high court to grant Gregory Afoko bail on March 14, 2019.

The Monday, July 15, 2019 decision of the High court presided over by Justice Merley Afua Wood has been widely condemned with well-known legal luminaries questioning the reason for rescinding the bail granted.

Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu believes the ongoing trial against the suspect is political and riddled with unconstitutionality that has violated the rights and freedom of Gregory Afoko.

Speaking in an interview on Yem Radio in Bolgatanga monitored by MyNewsGh.com, the renowned Human Rights lawyer and advocate suggested a hunger strike by the suspect may won’t be out of place.

“If I were Gregory Afoko, I would go on hunger strike till I die in custody and my blood would be demanded from them. That is what I would have done. I would have encouraged Gregory Afoko to go on hunger strike. He should not take anything offered him in that custody until whatever would happen should happen,” he said.
