Scholarships provided by the Government of Ghana (GoG) to graduate students studying in the United States of America (USA) contribute only two per cent to the total sources of funding for post-graduate studies.

“In contrast, the Government of Ghana scholarships contributed to 2% of all funded graduate students in the USA,” a report by GRASAG-USA on funding opportunities in the USA highlighted.

The report further identified that Ghanaians have a higher chance of obtaining funding for their post-graduate studies from the universities in the Midwest Region of the USA.

As part of the mission of (GRASAG-USA), a survey was conducted to understand the funding situation of Ghanaian graduate students in the USA.

Accordingly, the Research and Advocacy Committee of the Association rolled out a nationwide study that was aimed at discovering salient information concerning the funding situation of Ghanaian graduate students in the USA.

The survey had over 100 responses but only 78 of those responses were eligible for analysis.

The information covered included gender distribution, students with prior funding, a breakdown of funding sources, funding for different degree levels, a geographical distribution of funded students, and graduate students’ highest degree attained.

“The Midwest Region is home to 53% of students who reported having funding. The South and West regions follow at a distance, with 17% and 16%, respectively. Furthermore, the distribution of responses suggests that the Northeast region is the least likely location to get funding for graduate school. In fact, the odds of a Ghanaian getting funding in the Northeast is 0.011 times that of one obtaining funding in the Midwest region,” the report, released in August, stated.

GRASAG-USA said it is their hope that the report will aid in encouraging and equipping applicants to U.S. schools.
