The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated it will reject any results that they suspect may have been manipulated by the Electoral Commission (EC) since its flag bearer Nana Akufo-Addo has won at least 5,441,642 of votes cast to command an unassailable lead in the presidential race while the party has also won 170 seats.

Addressing a press conference in Accra on Thursday December 8, Sammi Awuku, National Youth Organiser of the NPP wondered why the electoral management body had refused to declare the results of the December 7 polls after voting ended last night.

According to him, the EC’s silence raises suspicions warning that the party will not accept massaged results.

“We are disturbed by the deliberate silence from the national collation center of the electoral commission of Ghana for over 15 hours. The youth of Ghana, have voted overwhelmingly for a new leader. The youth of Ghana have decided who their new leader should be and the youth of Ghana overwhelmingly voted for Nana Akufo-Addo. The youth have spoken and we will not accept massaged results that will trickle in after 15 hours of silence,” he stated.

Mr Awuku further said: “Again since polls closed 5:00pm yesterday, votes have been counted at the polling stations, collated and in most cases announced at the various constituency collation centers for both presidential and parliamentary elections. Media houses have declared results at both the polling station and constituency collation centers for both presidential and parliamentary elections.

“…Today nearly 94 per cent of the NPP’s official copies and the EC’s statement of polls and declaration of results forms commonly known as pink sheets, had been received and declared at collation centers across the country. We are also fully aware of a similar percentage of pink sheets have been received and collated by the Electoral Commission of Ghana at its constituency collation centers nationwide. Curiously the commission is telling the general public that it is yet to receive until just some few minutes ago any collated results from the 275 constituencies nationwide. This is curious because even in the absence of the E transmission in the past, the commission was faster and more efficient in receiving and acknowledging receipt of fax summary sheets of results from eight regional offices”.

The party has called on the chairperson of the Commission to declare the result to avoid creating “unnecessary tension” after a rather peaceful conduct of the election.
