Henry Quartey has secured over 1,000 jobs for his constituents in the security services - NPP Youth Leader
The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Wing in Ayawaso Central, Owoahene, has claimed that the Member of Parliament for the area and Interior Minister, Henry Quartey, has successfully secured jobs for a significant number of youth in his constituency within various security agencies.
According to Owoahene, the Minister used his position effectively to provide employment opportunities for the youth, demonstrating his commitment to his constituents.
Speaking at a program organized by GHOne TV on Thursday, September 5, 2024, Owoahene praised the MP's efforts, describing them as unprecedented.
"From Plant Pool to Paloma, he has tarred the roads and supported education. When it comes to providing jobs, it is unprecedented. Henry Quartey has been able to help the people of Ayawaso Central in ways that are remarkable. He has facilitated employment in the Fire Service, Immigration Service, and Prison Service. He has helped over a thousand people. For instance, some of my family members have benefited from the job offers provided by Henry Quartey in Ayawaso Central," Owoahene stated.
In July 2024, the Minority in Parliament threatened to summon Interior Minister Henry Quartey over what they considered a secretive recruitment process for the security services. This followed reports of a planned recruitment of 11,000 personnel from a backlog of applicants accumulated over the years.
The Minority argued that a press release from the Ghana Police Service suggested there was no backlog for recruitment into the security services.
Addressing journalists, the Ranking Member of the Defence and Interior Committee of Parliament, James Agalga, emphasized that the recruitment process should be transparent and fair.
Agalga contended that the police had cleared all applicants from the 2021-2022 recruitment exercise. Therefore, any new recruitment should involve fresh applications with clear eligibility criteria. He called for advertisements outlining the eligibility criteria, as was done during the NDC era, to ensure fairness and transparency.
“This is documentary evidence. They are saying that the entire recruitment process for the 2021 to 2022 recruitment cycle has been concluded. The concept of a backlog implies that you start a recruitment process and, along the way, are unable to complete it, resulting in some outstanding applicants. That is what a backlog is. However, the police are stating that they have cleared all the applicants,” Agalga said.
He continued, “What this means is that those who were not shortlisted and issued admission letters did not meet the eligibility criteria for recruitment. Thus, the 2021 to 2022 recruitment exercise has been concluded. We have been trying to emphasize that there is no backlog.”
“This is not the first time the security services under the Ministry of the Interior have conducted recruitment. During the NDC era, recruitments were preceded by advertisements that detailed the eligibility criteria. Therefore, the Interior Minister should adhere to the rules of fairness and transparency by issuing an advert,” Agalga added.
He concluded, “If necessary, the Interior Minister may be required to appear before the House to explain the recruitment process under his watch, which seems to be shrouded in secrecy.”
