Hundreds troop to Accra for NPP’s ‘Won Gbo’ demo

Hundreds of New Patriotic Party loyalists have arrived in the capital city for the much anticipated anti-government demonstration dubbed ‘Won Gbo’ which literally means we’re dying.

According to the NPP, the demonstration slated for February 18 is aimed at keeping government on its toes and also to alert government that it has failed in the delivery of its mandate.

Key amongst the reasons being cited by the NPP for the demonstration is the incessant power outage popularly referred to as ‘Dumsor’.

Checks by TV3 at some bus terminals in the capital showed several busses from the regions branded in NPP party colours coming in from the various regions to join what is expected to be the biggest anti government protest in recent times.

Speaking to one of the supporters at the Neoplan bus terminal in Accra, he said “we’re here to let the government know that we’re tired of the power crisis. I’m a cold store operator, my products have all rotten and now I have to look elsewhere for money to start afresh… Why?”

Another said “I’m here to support the leadership of the NPP because certainly we would come to power and fix the economy. Dumsor would be a thing of the past under NPP.”

Meanwhile the Ghana Police Service has denied claims by the NPP that it went to court to seek an injunction to stop the demonstration. The party at a press conference on Tuesday February 17 said the police, after giving them assurances of protection, sneaked to court to stop the demonstration.

But the Public Affairs Director of the Greater Accra Police Command, ASP Christian Tetteh Yehounu dismissed the claims and indicated that “how can we say we will protect you and change our minds without officially informing you.

“The reason why we went to court was because the NPP later came to the police that they want to change their route through the Central Business Centre and we told them we cannot allow that. We went to court to restrain them so that they stay on the routes which we agreed upon.”

In a related development, pressure and anti corruption group Occupy Ghana, has thrown its weight behind the New Patriotic Party’s demonstration. Occupy Ghana says apart from the frustrating issues of corruption in this government, they have displayed clear lack of will to solve the problems of this country.
