Bernard Oduro Takyi, a former Presiding Member of Sunyani West District Assembly who has been disqualified from participating in the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP)'s upcoming parliamentary primaries for the Sunyani West Constituency, has indicated that he joined the party by personal conviction.
Bernard Oduro said this during his interview on Happy 98.9 FM’s Epa Hoa Daben Show on Monday 16th March 2020.
During the interview he indicated that his love for the NPP is unimaginable and beyond understanding and therefore he feels saddened and broken-hearted when he is treated unfairly.
He emphasized that the NPP’s introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme(NHIS) in 2005 under former President Kufuor convinced him to join the NPP and not because of any enticement or family ties.
He recounted how in 2002, he suffered as a victim of a gunshot but because there was no national health insurance, his parents incurred a lot of cost in ensuring that he got medical care.
Therefore, when former President Kufuor introduced the NHIS in 2005, he accepted it as a policy for every Ghanaian and most importantly because he had experienced a medical emergency 3 years prior to the NHIS, he could fathom and appreciate how the average Ghanaian had been relieved of cost of medical care.
The aspirant was disqualified by the vetting committee to contest for the party’s primaries in the Sunyani West Constituency and has since appealed to the party’s appeals committee for redress. He is scheduled to appear before the Appeals Committee in Accra on Wednesday; 18th March 2020.
