General Secretary of the opposition NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia on the back of CDD’s Afro barometer survey about the current state of affairs in the country, has said that he is part of the larger community of people who believe the country is headed for ‘doom’.

Per data gathered in the survey, the approval ratings on key economic indicators of the government’s performance had taken a nosedive in comparison to the year 2017. It explained that six out of 10 Ghanaians (59%) say the country is “going in the wrong direction.” The share of citizens who see the country as “going in the right direction” declined by 15 percentage points from 2017 to 35%.

Reacting to this, however, Mr Nketia fully declared himself as one of the 59 per cent of people who think Akufo-Addo is plunging the country into destruction with his rather poor performance.

According to him, the report is a very damning one which truly represents the current state of affairs but the president and his group of ‘family and friends’ keep twisting issues in a direction which gives an unrealistic hope to Ghanaians.

He argued, “That’s a very damning report and I’m not surprised. The only positive thing about it is people hoping, it tells you that the government is doing a good job at painting something that is white to be black to keep hope alive, maybe through media and other things. Everybody tells you we’re not okay at all, we know we’re going in the wrong direction and yet for you to find hope for good things to happen in that wrong direction, it tells you that somebody is painting something wrongly.

“I am one of the 59 percent who thinks that the economy is going in the wrong direction, in fact, the state of governance is bad,” Mr Nketia emphasized.

Further touching on the state of governance, he lamented about the seemingly defunct democratic principles in the country.

He stated for a fact that all the democratic principles in the country are not working.

“In fact the state of governance is bad, all the democratic principles are not working, the principle of self-determination…government is moving to block all democratic transparent elections by invading the electoral commission and doing all types of things there wrongly.”

Asiedu Nketia was speaking on GHOne TV’s State of Affairs, Thursday, November 28, 2019.
