I tested for suicidal tendencies after UT Bank collapse – Amoabeng

Former chairman of defunct UT Bank, Prince Kofi Amoabeng has explained that he felt some shocks upon learning about the closure of the bank by the Bank of Ghana.

Speaking to Joy News in an interview on Monday, February 18, 2019, Mr. Amoabeng said he went in for heart check-up after hearing about the closure of his bank.

In the interview monitored by DGN Online, Mr. Amoabeng disclosed that after the heart check up with two of his doctors, he took the decision to test if he had any suicidal tendencies.

UT Bank and Capital Bank had their licenses revoked in August 2017 by the Bank of Ghana due to insolvency.

Mr. Amoabeng said on the day it was announced that UT Bank had been closed down, he was listening to CNN to catch up with world news but decided to visit the washroom.

He said in the process he checked his phone and realised he had about 60 messages about people checking up on him so he decided to call his daughter to find out what was happening.

He stated that it was then that his daughter told him to tune into local television station to hear about the closure of UT Bank.

Surprise

He said he was highly surprised about the closure of the bank especially because he had spoken to finance minister, Ken Ofori-Atta whom he referred to as his brother three days earlier and nothing about UT Bank’s closure came up for discussion.

Commenting on the allegations that he took Ghc 5 million from UT Bank, he stated that he felt like he had been hit below the belt after it was claimed he had taken Ghc 5 million from UT Bank’s account, adding that he was compelled to issue a statement because his reputation had been attacked.

UT, he said, was a bank which most Ghanaians loved and identified with.

He urged thag government should consider supporting some indigenous organizations that Ghanaians look up to.

He said the Bank of Ghana could have taken a number of other actions instead of closing down the Bank, arguing that there was sound corporate governance in place contrary to claims that the leadership system at UT Bank was weak.
