The outgoing Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Prof Emmanuel Martey, has said even though critics have branded him a member of the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), he is yet to know if those people have been paying his party dues to the Danquah-Busia-Dombo family.

“Already, the Moderator of the Presby Church has been branded an NPP man but those who say that, perhaps, they are paying my NPP dues. And NPP, you have not brought me receipts that have been paid to you [on my behalf]. Now who paid for my NPP party card? I’m yet to hear that,” the controversial cleric said when the flag bearer of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, addressed the 16th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church on Monday, 22 August.

He told the three-time flagbearer: “We appreciate your sense of political maturity and decency.

“I’m yet to hear condemnation from any political leader whose members use indecent language on the radio and other places. Honestly, there is one or two [that] I’ve heard from NPP [members] who might be using indecent language, but compared to other parties, you are doing better.”

He added that the Presbyterian Church will not hesitate to support a future Akufo-Addo government to build Ghana. “We will keep on praying for you, and for calling on the Presbyterian Church into partnership, we will partner you to build Ghana… Nana, I wish you well, your seriousness and experience. You have said you are a Christian; stay in your faith and you will be an overcomer,” Rev Prof Martey indicated.

His comments were in response to an appeal by Nana Akufo-Addo who, while addressing the General Assembly, described the Presbyterian Church “as a progressive partner in the project of the self-confident and prosperous Ghana that my party seeks to build”.
