The Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) has scheduled Tuesday, October 7 to go to the rescue of all casual workers in Ghana over treatment meted out to them by employers.

The Union will make a statement on behalf of casual and temporary workers as part of the global day of precarious work.

“We put ourselves together and draw government’s attention with respect to the laws of the land as to how temporary and casual workers are being treated,” Solomen Kotei, Secretary General of The Union, told TV3’s Daniel Opoku in an interview on Friday, September 26.

He implicated Chinese, Indian and Lebanese employers of falling foul of Ghanaian laws regarding casual work.

“What we have here in this country now is that the jobs that are being described as casual or temporary are of permanent nature,” Mr Kotei noted.

“You have people who have worked as casual workers for 18 years, 19 years [and] 25 years and we think this is not fair.”

He said they will petition the president regarding the taxation on overtime allowances of casual workers, noting that some are even remunerated below the daily minimum wage.
