Ignorance fuelled RCC attack - Bempong Marfo

The attack on the Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator by a private security arm within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Delta Force, is an indication of the lack of understanding of the work of the Regional Security Council, Bempong Marfo, a former Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, has said.

According to him, due to the lack of appreciation of the coordinator’s role, certain people would want the appointee to work to satisfy their parochial agenda.

He has, therefore, asked the general public to read the Act of Parliament, Act 526, which defines the security structures in Ghana in order to avert a repeat of what happened in Kumasi last week.

His comments come in the wake of an attack by the pro-NPP vigilante group which stormed the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council on Friday, 24 March to stop George Agyei, appointed as the regional security coordinator, from performing his duties.

According to members of the party’s private security arm, it cannot work with Mr Agyei since he is not a native of the region.

But speaking in interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Monday, 27 March, Mr Marfo said: “This shows a lack of understanding of the position of the Regional Security Coordinator, people don’t understand it and so they will have problems with him. Normally they would want to use you to do certain things and so if they don’t know you, they would not like to work with you, but as to whether that is right or wrong, it is for the public to judge.”
