Judiciary must hang head in shame – Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has described as ‘abominable’ the recent exposé of massive bribery and corruption in the judiciary by ace investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas.

Speaking at the Ghana Bar Association Conference in Kumasi in the Ashanti region Monday, Kufuor said decisive measures must be taken to deal with the judges caught in the “disgraceful” scandal.

“The recent exposure of the judiciary being perverse and corrupt is abominable and it should cause all in the legal and the judiciary profession to hang their heads in shame”.

“The disgrace befallen our nation, our bench and our profession through the exposure should give all of us a very rude shock. The solution shouldn’t lie in any superficial piecemeal and orphan treatment even as we contemplate arresting and eradicating the cancerous treatment,” former President Kufuor said.

A total of 34 judges are facing impeachment as the video evidence of their corrupt practices expected to be aired on September 22, entangles them in the damning corruption scandal.

One of the high-profile judges, Justice John Ajet-Nassam, a High Court Judge, who freed Alfred Agbesi Woyome in the controversial Gh¢51 million judgment debt scandal was videotaped and audio recorded in separate conversations with suspects or persons acting as agents of suspects before him to compromise big cases.

Other judges are Human Rights Court judge Kofi Essel Mensah and Charles Quist; a High Court Judge.

The over two years painstaking investigations by Anas will be released in full in the coming weeks.
