Management of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have been reminded that the declaration of the school as a security zone is still in force.

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Simon Osei-Mensah on Wednesday wrote to the Vice Chancellor of the University directing him to “uphold” the declaration until further notice.

The Ashanti Regional Security Council declared KNUST a security zone in September 2019 when it got intelligence that some people were plotting to disturb the peace of the University.

The reminder comes at a time some halls of the University were planning to observe their hall week celebrations between late February and early April. It might have been prompted by the bloody clash between two halls during similar event at the University of Cape Coast last week.

“In this regard, anybody who directly or indirectly engages in activities that may disturb the peace on the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology campus shall be sternly dealt with in accordance with the law,” the minister warned.

The Regional Security Council has also urged the management of the KNUST to ensure that all activities held in campus do not include demonstration or activities of mass movement that will disturb the peace on the University campus.

“It is the expectation of the Regional Security Council that students are reminded that the declaration of the University as a Security Zone is still in force and must be strictly observed,” the minister said.

Mr. Simon Osei-Mensah added, “Breaches will attract the maximum legal security penalty or sanctions associated with it.”
