The promotion of the Ashanti regional Police Commander, Nathan Kofi Boakye, from a Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) to Commissioner of Police (COP) by President John Dramani Mahama is laudable, security analyst Dr Emmanuel Kwesi Aning has said.

A letter signed by DSP Freeman Tetteh, on behalf of the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, which announced the promotion of Mr Boakye on Monday June 27, said: “The President and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has promoted Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Nathan Kofi Baokye to the rank of Commissioner of Police. His promotion takes effect from 1 June 2016. The IGP, Dr John Kudalor expresses his heartiest congratulations to COP Kofi Boakye”.

The Head of the Department of Research at the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre (KAIPTC) said Mr Boakye “has the professional experience and intellectual tenacity to get the job done”.

He told Naa Dedei Tettey on Class91.3FM’s 12Live News on Tuesday June 28 that the Ashanti region is a tough place to police, but Mr Boakye has managed to hold the place together.

In his view, Mr Boakye has committed himself to “getting the job done in a proud manner to make sure that no one is above the law”. Dr Aning added that Mr Boakye’s performance in the region is worthy of emulation and holds the opinion that Mr Boakye has demonstrated his abilities everywhere he has served. “We saw his performance in the Western region and since he left very little has taken place”.

He expressed admiration for Mr Boakye describing him as an all-rounded, modern police officer, who is smart, confident, well-connected and sensitive to the traditions and cultural nuances of every locality he serves. To him, “the president’s decision is very welcoming”.

Asked about the concerns people have raised about certain criminal cases in the region, Dr Aning said crime in the region has responded to the proactiveness of Mr Boakye since he took office. He added that the commander has managed political tensions in the region effectively.
