A member of the NPP legal team, Kwame Akufo, has described a suit by Justice Francis Kpegah against Nana Akufo Addo as “jejune and a mere joke”.

Lawyer Kwame Akufo said the “weak” writ filed by Justice Kpegah is just to make mockery of the NPP’s electoral fraud case.

The NPP flagbearer for the 2012 general elections, Nana Akufo-Addo, has been dragged to an Accra High Court accused of impersonation by former Supreme Court judge Justice Kpegah.

According to Justice Kpegah, Nana Akufo-Addo is posing as a lawyer when evidence available to him from sources such as the General Legal Council proves otherwise.

In his writ filed on Tuesday, March 18, Justice Kpegah also indicted the former President Kufuor for appointing Nana Addo as the country’s Attorney General.

Justice Kpegah in his writ stated that Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is impersonating W.A.D Akufo Addo who is on the roll of lawyers as No. 1190.

He is seeking the courts among other reliefs: “A declaration that on a true and proper interpretation of the General Legal Council Act, Act 38 of 1960 (as amended) unless a person is called to the Bar in Ghana and his name entered in the Roll of Lawyers by the body mandated under the said Act 38 (as amended) to regulate the training and certification of persons after a prescribed course of study, that person cannot be deemed competent to practice law in any court of Ghana.”

“A declaration that the Law Firm established as Akufo-Addo, Prempeh and Co. at 67 Kojo Thompson Road, Adabraka, Accra is an illegal law firm and therefore not competent to represent any party in litigation before any court in Ghana.

“A perpetual injunction restraining the said Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo from holding himself out as a lawyer competent to practice in Ghana courts or anybody regarding him as such.”

However, speaking on XYZ News, Lawyer Akufo said the suit has no merit and is a deliberate attempt by Justice Kpegah to denigrate Nana Akufo Addo.

Mr. Akufo said: "We believe and firmly so that this allegation by Justice Kpegah has been brought merely because of the pendency of the electoral petition case in the Supreme Court. This case is just been brought in bad faith, it is pedestrian, it is just to take Ghanaians off the ball, there is no substance in this case.

“Akufo-Addo was called to the bar in England in 1971 and was called to the Ghana bar in 1975 and subsequently the gentleman has risen and distinguished himself in the law practice and has become Attorney General of this republic, it is therefore regrettable to hear people like Justice Kpegah bandy these jejune allegations, we believe it is just a joke”.
