Three Police officers have been arrested by the Ashanti regional Police command over the killing of a 22-year-old man at Krofrom, a suburb of Kumasi.
The officers who were chasing an alleged criminal arrested and brutalised the deceased, who residents have described as innocent, in a mistaken identity incident Friday.
Subsequently, the regional Police commander DCOP Kofi Boakye visited the area and assured irate residents that perpetrators would be brought to book.
The three officers were arrested under the instruction of the regional police commander, the deputy regional Police commander DCOP Ampofo Doku told Starr News.
“The basis for their arrest is that they arrested somebody and the person died. They are in custody, their statement will be taken and then investigations will continue. For now, nothing incriminating has been established against them,” he said.
Background
The Police Friday dawn arrested the victim known as Tawiah who was suspected to be a criminal being chased by the Police in an earlier incident.
According sources, several calls by the residents that Tawiah was not a criminal and was a case of mistaken identity fell on deaf ears as the Police officers brutally assaulted the victim with batons and dragged him on the streets till he became unconscious.
He was later bundled into a Police van and sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital for treatment but was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
News of Tawiah’s death angered the youth who have taken to the streets burning car tyres and blocking roads in the community which is near the Manhyia Palace – seat of the Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.
