President John Agyekum Kufuor, his wife Theresa, and Mr. Tommy Amematekpor, special advisor to the president, were at the weekend honoured at a grand durbar at Agbozume, in the Ketu District of the Volta Region.

After having received special gifts of kente cloth, and being praised by a citation that accompanied them, President Kufour addressed the crowd. He reiterated his government's determination to ensure that the Volta Region received its fair share of the benefits of development, mentioning specifically the Accra-Aflao road, which should begin to reap commercial rewards this year.

Both he and Mr. Amematekpor urged people to banish suspicion, fear and prejudice based along ethnic lines and to support the present political reality.

Following up on this, Mr. Amematekpor said that the government had, within only one year, demonstrated its ability to move the country out of its current economic malaise and towards a better future.

The durbar was attended by several dignitaries, including Ms. Elizabeth Ohene, Major Courage Quashigah, General Joshua Hamidu, and Togbui Addo VIII, who chaired the ceremony.

Earlier in the week, the Secretary General of the World Alliance of the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) Mr. Nicholas Nightingale paid a courtesy call on the president the Castle Osu.

He commended YMCA Ghana for its good work, especially on the promotion of adolescent sexual health using peer educators which may become a model for other African countries.

President Kufuor reiterated his government's commitment to work to get the youth of the country to grow up responsibly and be fully aware of their social responsibilities.
