Ghana marks its 69th Independence Day on March 6, 2026, commemorating the end of British colonial rule and the country’s attainment of sovereignty.

This year’s national celebration is being held at the forecourt of Jubilee House, where Ghanaians from all walks of life have gathered to demonstrate patriotism and national pride.

As part of the event held at the Jubilee House, President John Dramani Mahama is expected to deliver a national address to citizens.

The ceremony will also feature parades by the armed forces, schoolchildren, and workers, alongside cultural displays and performances by traditional groups.

Ghana has, over the years, marked Independence Day with march-pasts and ceremonial displays by the security services in their full regalia.

The country gained independence on March 6, 1957, when its first President and Prime Minister, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, declared the nation free from British colonial rule, making Ghana the first African country south of the Sahara to achieve independence.
