The Police Administration says it will not impose any police officer as bodyguard on any Presidential Candidate going into the November general elections.

According to the Police, it allowed the various flag bearers in the last elections to have a say in which police officers they wanted in their security set up, adding that same will be done in the upcoming polls.

The Police’s statement comes on the back of the arrest of the three South African ex Police officers arrested by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) for allegedly engaging in acts that threaten national security.

The three, Major Ahmed Shaik Hazis, 54, (Rtd), WO/ Denver Dwayhe Naidu, 39, (Rtd) and 45-year-old Captain Mlungiseleli Jokani (Rtd) were arrested at the El-Capitano Hotel, at Agona Duakwa in the Central Region, while training fifteen young men in various military drills, including unarmed combat, weapon handling, VIP protection techniques and rapid response maneuvers.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has confirmed the 15 people being trained by three South African ex-police men are part of its security detail, but denied links to any treasonable motive.

Speaking to Kweku Owusu Adjei on Si Mi So on Kasapa FM, the Director of Public Affairs of the Ghana Police Service, Superintendent Cephas Arthur stated that the various presidential candidates and their running mate should be allowed of adequate police protection during the elections.

“We have always given them protection. In 2012 we gave them security, not only that we gave them the option of making an input as to which police officer they will be comfortable with in their security set up. We don’t just impose any police officer on any flag bearers. If you observed, all the flag bearers were given protection such that even three months after the elections Hassan Ayariga was still moving about with the policeman assigned to him until we finally withdrew him.”
