The outgoing Electoral Commission Chairman, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan should be allowed to supervise the 2016 elections, MP for Assin Central Kennedy Agyepong has proposed.

In his view, the exposure of the loopholes in the electoral processes during the 2012 election petition hearing will make it difficult for the EC boss to take the 2016 elections for granted, were he to supervise it.

“The way we’ve exposed Afari-Gyan, he is a necessarily evil that should have stayed there to conduct the next elections for us to see,”

“If you get him out and bring a new person who has been appointed by the President, that person will work extra hard to ensure that he retains power, so I don’t trust any of the issues they are bringing up,” Agyepong told US-based Sahara TV in an interview.

He said he has grapevine information that the president will appoint someone around age 45 to replace the EC chair who is due for retirement next year.

“From the grapevine I know he will put someone between the age of 40 and 45 so you can imagine, a 45-year-old man taking a position that he is supposed to leave at age 70, then God knows what is going to happen,” he stated.

He bemoaned the constitutional clause that allows the President to appoint the EC chair.
