Presidential candidate of the opposition New Patriotic Party, Nana AKufo-Addo is not enthused by the rhetorical approach to peace deal as he charges all stakeholders to demonstrate that they are committed to peaceful elections.

He maintained that the NPP is committed to a peaceful election and would therefore accept the verdict of a free and fair election.

He was addressing a summit in Accra where all the seven presidential candidates signed a peace accord to ensure that Ghana’s general elections in December 7 would be violent-free. He declared, “I have spent nearly four decades of my life standing shoulder-to-shoulder with the people of Ghana in advancing the cause of democracy.

I want to be president of a united country that is at peace with itself.” He however cited recent attacks on supporters of the NPP perpetuated by supporters of NDC in Asutifi and Odododiodio and expressed disappointment in the inability of the police to act.

“It is in our collective interest that we ensure that rules and regulations in the conduct of elections are fair and transparent and that we all develop respect for them, the Electoral Commission, government, the security agencies and the citizenry must play their part in delivering a free and fair election,” Nana Akufo-Addo stated.

The NPP presidential candidate added, “There should be no lingering questions about the legitimacy of an election and the winning candidate, at the end of the process, should receive the unalloyed support of all.

That is how we can strengthen our democracy and the peace and stability of our nation.” He noted that the NPP has for years fashioned out a comprehensive programme that will lead to a rapid development of our country Ghana, and significant improvement in the standards of living of her people.”

President John Mahama, representing the governing National Democratic, Dr Edward Mahama, representing the People’s National Convention, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings representing the National Democratic Party, Ivor Greenstreet of the Convention People’s Party and running mate to the PPP flagbearer Bridgette Dzogbenuku, independent candidate Jacob Osei Yeboah and Nana Akufo-Addo all gave their full commitment for peace in the elections.
