The suspension of the Managing Director of the Metro Mass Transit (MMT) Limited, Bennet Aboagye, and his personal assistant, Yiadom Kesse, over alleged financial malpractices, is a step in the right direction, Victor Kojoga Adawudu, a private legal practitioner, has said.

According to him, the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) campaigned on the back of fighting corruption among public office holders, therefore, the government is making efforts to fulfil that promises.

The staff union of MMT on Tuesday, 17 April 2018 petitioned the Transport Minister, Mr Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, to remove Mr Aboagye from office so that full-scale investigations could be conducted into the allegation.

Mr Aboagye has been accused of breaching procurement laws in the acquisition of some 300 new buses for the company, an allegation he has denied.

The embattled manager has also been accused of trying to bribe a whistleblower known as Lawal with GH¢40,000 to shut him up.

Speaking on this on TV3’s New Day programme on Saturday, 21 April 2018, Mr Adawudu said: “The NPP campaigned of making sure that there will be no corruption, there should be nothing stinky within public service and so, I think it is a step in the right direction.

“These are people (NPP) who believe that there should be nothing untoward. As a society, we believe that public office should not be used for self-aggrandizement or to amass wealth.

“We go into public service to serve the people, to give back to society what society has given to you, so for me, the suspension is a good thing. I only have the hope that whiles they are suspended, any investigative report that will come let us test in the law court.”
