Koku Anyidoho - Deputy NDC Gen. Sec.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formed a civil war committee of which the chairman of its 2016 campaign team, Peter Mac Manu is head, Mr Koku Anyidoho, a deputy general secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), has said.
According to Mr Anyidoho, he was convinced that comments by Mr Mac Manu to the effect that the NPP would declare its own results from the 2016 presidential poll were an indicator of the leading opposition group’s intent to plunge the country into war, as it would contravene the requirements of Article 49 of the 1992 constitution which mandates only the Electoral Commission to declare results of elections and referenda.
Mr Anyidoho said after failing to prove that there was rigging in the 2012 elections, plus throwing muck at EC Chair Charlotte Osei on several occasions and the training of mercenaries ahead of the elections in November, among others, the NPP had still failed to make itself attractive to the electorate, hence its latest decision to make the country ungovernable.
“If Mac Manu is man enough, he should go ahead and declare results and see how the law will deal with him. They have set up an NPP civil war planning committee of which Mac Manu is leader. I am telling you…I am saying that Mac Manu is the chairman of the NPP civil war planning committee, which we know of. It is for the purposes of such things (civil war) that he has begun talk that they will declare their own results because they are preparing for war. How do you go declaring your own results when the law speaks against that?” Mr Anyidoho asked in an interview with Nana Ama Agyarko on Accra News on Tuesday June 7.
Mr Anyidoho further stated that with such declarations by the NPP leadership including ‘power at all costs’, ‘all die be die’, and the emergence of such pressure groups as OccupyGhana, Let My Vote Count Alliance (LMVCA), and insults, Mr Mac Manu felt emboldened to express disregard for the Inspector General Police (IGP), the military, the Electoral Commission (EC) and proceed to declare the poll results. “That is what they want to do,” the former spokesperson for late President John Atta Mills said.
“So, he’s made it obvious that he is the head of the civil war planning committee of the NPP. But by the grace of God, it will not come to pass,” Mr Anyidoho added.
