Ghana’s President John Mahama says the death of former South African leader Nelson Mandela must signal a generational change for new leaders on the Continent.

He says African leaders must recognise that the era of liberation fight is paving way for the generation of providing decent standard of living for Africans.

Mahama told journalists in France, on the sidelines of the ongoing Elysee conference on peace and security in Africa that, Ghana believes that with Madiba’s death, “a certain era is passing; the era of liberation has passed”.

“It means that, for us the new leaders on the Continent, we must focus on the next change of the challenge that faces our Continent that is creating a decent and dignified life for our people”, President Mahama said.

Mandela died Thursday at age 95 after bouts of lung infection and other ailments.

He is being honoured around the world, including the United States of America, where flags are flying at half mast to mourn him.
