Former President John Dramani Mahama has congratulated Muhammadu Buhari on his re-election as President of Nigeria.
Mr. Buhari’s All Progressives Congress (APC) won in 19 of the 36 states while the PDP was victorious in 17 states and the capital, Abuja, according to Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral (INEC).
The APC got 15.2 million votes while the PDP received 11.3 million.
In a Facebook post, Mr. Mahama said “Congratulations to H.E. President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President Professor Yemi Osinbajo, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and all friends in the APC on your successful re-election for another 4-year term.”
Buhari led a military regime for 20 months in the 1980s and was first elected president in 2015, becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent and win the presidency.
Atiku Abubakar rejects results
The runner-up in Nigeria's presidential election Atiku Abubakar has rejected the result as a "throwback to the jackboot era of military dictatorship".
He has described the exercise as a "sham" and has vowed to go to court.
